Side-by-Side

They are the most popular type of double pushchair newborn, and prams can typically seat 2 children in a row. They tend to be wider than single pushchairs, which means they're less agile on footpaths and can be a bit difficult to navigate through kerbs with a car seat attached. The extra width allows them to move more easily through doorways and are more evenly distributed so that it is easier to carry around on your back.

They can be used as twin prams from the beginning and a lot of models can be used with a carrycot or two car seats. Some can even convert into one-mode with a basket alongside (like the Cybex Venus).

The Bugaboo Donkey 5 is a great illustration of this. In Twin Mode, you can place the rear seat alongside the carrycot. This creates an entirely enclosed twin space and is perfect for babies. The large shopping basket behind the seat can be used in mono mode for a single child. It also has front and rear suspensions that can handle bumps and uneven surfaces a little more easily. Tandem

If you're planning to have twins, you want a pushchair that can allow the children to sit close to each other and look at each one another. They are ideal for Prams activities like going to the zoo since the children can look at all the animals together. They're also ideal for parents who must keep an eye on their toddler and the other on their baby, as they can see both of them simultaneously.

Some tandem pushchairs are very flexible, as they can be converted to single mode. This is especially useful if you plan to have more children than two (or if your eldest child isn't a need for a buggy any longer). This means that you won't have an empty pushchair that you need to store away which can be expensive.

The Cybex Venus, for example can be used in mono or double mode. Its frame expands to accommodate a second seat. This isn't the heaviest of pushchairs, but it does come with a large basket for shopping that sits behind the front seat in double mode (and behind the seat in mono mode).
